Erica Revisited

I had the pleasure to work with the lovely Ms. Erica Raetz again the night before the elections. Erica and I wanted to work on some glamour head & shoulder portraits for her portfolio. We had a great time and with the help of Aubrey our MUA for the evening, we rocked out some pretty awesome images. We hope you enjoy our creations of the beautiful Erica Raetz.

Jordon Park & Hodgson Mill Photos

It’s been a little while since I’ve gotten out-and-about shooting images. So Friday evening I went down to Jordan Park after the showers and shot a few images. I like the area so much I came back a couple hours later to shoot some night time images. Saturday my wife and I went for a little ride around the ozarks and ended up at Hodgson Mill, so I shoot a few images there. Here are a few of this weekends images.

Friday evening at Jordon Park.

Saturday at Hodgson Mill.

Clothing Consulation

At Astonishing Portraits, we believe great portraiture starts with a pre-session consultation meeting. During that session we discuss clothing for your photographic session. Clothing is really the best form of “prop” for a portrait. Clothing can define the moment or it can define the personality of the portraiture. Clothing also makes the difference between an upscale or just an average session.

All other items pertaining to the session should be coordinated with the clothing, so that other props complement the clothing. The use of coordinated clothing and props enriches the portrait experience from the client’s perspective, making the session more gratifying, fun and successful.

The wrong selection of clothes can ruin the photograph. That is why we feel it is so important to have a consultation before the session. Below are several topics that we cover during the consultation.

Dark and Light Colors
Darker colors help to blend the body with the background so that the faces are the most important part of the photograph. Generally, dark colors slenderize the subject and light colors seem to add weight to the body. This point is generally not a factor with children, but with some overweight or skinny children it could be.

The color of the clothing should always be toned down. Bright colors pull attention away from the face. Prints and patterns are distractions that draw attention away from the face also. Avoid fad-type clothing as this clothing soon dates the photograph, choose in favor of something less trendy and more conservative for a timeless portrait.

Solid colors in cool or neutral shades with long sleeves always look good. Cool colors such as blue and green recede and warm colors such as red, orange and yellow advance. Cool colors emphasize the faces and make them appear warmer and more pleasing in photographs.

Glasses
Glasses may or may not be worn. Nonreflective lenses are helpful, but restrict the lighting setup that the photographer uses. Removal of glare from glasses is time consuming and difficult cost you more for a finished photograph. If possible, it is best if you can borrow a matching set of frames without lenses from your doctor for the photographic session.

Shoes
Shoes are often a problem on small children as they sometimes dominate the portrait. If the clothing warrants it, children are best photographed without their shoes as children’s feet are quite cute.

Shoe styles and colors should also be coordinated to the rest of your attire: dark outfits call for dark shoes and socks.

Hats
Children often feel right at home in their favorite had or cap. Hats can also add an element of uniqueness to your portrait when coordinated with the rest of the wardrobe.

Group Clothing
For a clean look, the color schemes of groups and families should be no more than two or three colors. The most beautiful portraits are when the family is all dressed the same - not in matching outfits, but all dressed in denim, khakis, or white for example. The clothing should be kept simple so it will not distract from your faces.

Finally, group sessions should have garments that blend. All family members should wear either formal or informal outfits. Photographs where some members are wearing suits and ties and others wearing jeans and polo shirts are distracting and take away from the faces in the photograph.

We look forward to speaking with you and helping you create a beautiful portrait that you will cherish a lifetime. Please call the studio at 417.872.2284 to schedule you complimentary consultation appointment.

Photographically yours,

Larry Davidson

Down Town Springfield, Color Images

I spent about an hour walking around parts of downtown Springfield this afternoon right after lunch. The sky was just stunningly beautiful. I popped of a few images in hopes of showing the sky and its glory and also was looking for some nice contrasting colors. I would like to share a few of those images with our friends and clients.

The Jordan & Mackenzie

I had a great time at Jordan Valley Park this morning with Jordon & Mackenzie. We took over the place for about an hour and turned these to active little guys loose. In the process, we pull off a few images of these little cuties.

Introducing Erica the August TFP Shoot

I was lucky enough to shoot with a beautiful young lady named Erica at spectacular location this evening for the August TFP shoot. Erica is new to modeling and wanted some images to add to a modeling and man-o-man did she rock out. We got some killer images! Not only is she oh-so-pretty, she’s really sweet as well. Sorry, guys this little lass is spoken for!
Thanks for the great evening Erica, it was truly a pleasure to spend a couple hours with you. This is just an example of the truly AWESOME images Erica rocked out this evening.

Roundtree Elementary & RNA Gathering

The Roundtree Neighborhood Association along with Roundtree Elementary put on a neighborhood event welcoming the children of Roundtree Elementary back to school. It was meet your teacher day where parents could meet their children’s teacher at the school. The RNA brought in some entertainment for the children and free food for all that attended. I stopped by for a few minutes and there was a good turn-out. I did squeeze in a few photo shoots while I was there. So, I would like to give a shoot out to all the neighbors that supported the event and post a few snap shots taken the brief time I was there.

If you see a picture here of your child and you want a copy of it, just snatch it off the website. Click on the view FULL SIZE option in the slideshow and it will open the image on a web page. Right click the image and save it to our computer.
If there happens to a picture of yourself or child which you would like me to remove, just send me an e-mail and I will take it down.
Roundtree neighbors, feel free to make your comments here on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest regards,
Larry

Feeling Good and On a Roll

I’ve been on a roll with some images outside of my portraiture work. In the past two weeks I’ve had two images that’s been named “Photo of the Day” on DPHOTOJournal and My Shutter Space. This is really unusual to have two different photos named “Photo of the Day in such a close time space and generally this only happens about once a year for most people. To check out my image on My Shutter Space visit

Things to Remind Us of Cooler Days

With summer finally here and an outside location portraiture cancelled due to the heat, I thought I would work on some new images. The image of the tree and fog was actually taken back in the winter. I set the image aside and almost forgot about it. While searching for another image, this one came up so I thought I would post it to remind us of cooler days.

The other images were created in the studio today. I hope you enjoy them and would be happy for some comments or critiques.
